MEET THE ARTIST
Born and raised in Senegal, Fatim Soumaré is a visual artist and weaver whose practice is deeply rooted in traditional West African textile crafts. From childhood, she was introduced to these techniques by her mother, an artisan dyer, which shaped her appreciation for textile-making and cultural preservation. At the end of 2020, after returning to Senegal following 12 years in France, Soumaré travelled across southern Senegal and became inspired by the tradition of hand-spinning rain-fed cotton known as Falé. Recognising that this knowledge was at risk of disappearing, she founded a Falé textile crafts collective that today includes 200 women spinners living in five island villages in the Sine Saloum region. Through this initiative, she aims to preserve and pass on this remarkable craft tradition to future generations. She later established a workshop for the creation of exceptional handmade textiles, joined by her partner and husband, Laurent Grisel, with whom she developed the company. Their workshop in Djilor, located in the culturally rich and biodiverse Sine Saloum region of Senegal, brings together traditional weaving, hand embroidery, crochet, and other artisanal practices that continue to evolve and inspire their creative process.
